ATV Offroad Fury Pro Demo/Beta (PSP)

This demo came my way recently and, having the UMD of the final game at hand, I decided to compare the two. Without using CWCheats or anything, I was able to activate most of the final game features in the demo, plus the odd deleted mini-game. This all rests on the config.xml file found in the demo. By altering a few of the options, the nature of the demo is altered completely:

mAllUnlockablesUnlocked="0"
mClassicModeAvailable="0"
mEnableSinglePlayerMiniGames="0"
mPSPE3Demo="0"

By changing the values to "1", the demo becomes a beta of the final game, complete with unfinished levels. There is a similar file in the final game and, having found that the advertised cheats do not seem to work, changed the mAllUnlockablesUnlocked="0" option and added mEnableSinglePlayerMiniGames="1" to unlock virtually all of the content.

Back to the demo. So what do we get here?

These are the Single Player menu options which, while they are of a different design to the final game, have pretty much the same content. The only addition is the Pool mini-game. The names of the games are altered though:

MINIGAMES

Beta - RINGS,GHOST, BOMB, POOL, TREASURE, RING_EDIT
Final - RINGS OF FIRE, GHOST, BOMB DODGE, TREASURE HUNT, BOWLING, RING_EDIT

Evidently, the Pool game was replaced by the Bowling game in the final release.

The sub-menus for each Single Player Mode have more options in the beta. If you want to go off exploring some of the levels, use the Practice option.

SINGLE PLAYER MODE

Beta - GAME MODE - SINGLE EVENT, TIME TRIAL, PRACTICE
Final - RACE MODE - RACE, LAP ATTACK

As a comparison of the tracks available:

SUPERCROSS

TRACK SELECT

Beta - HAMPTON FARM SX_01, JUNKYARD SX_02, BELL SPORTS ARENA SX_03, LAFAYETTE SX_04, THE YOSHIMURA CENTRE SX_05, MAXXIS HOTEL SX_06, DURABLUE STADIUM SX_07, H-BOMB STADIUM SX_08, SANTA FE SX-09
Final - BIG RED RACEWAY, JUNKYARD, BELLA SPORTS AREA, LAFAYETTE

As you can see, there's a vast reduction in the number of tracks, with the names of remaining tracks changed. Are these available in other modes in the final game? Maybe, but probably not. The vehicles seem to be the same, although these are renamed as well in some cases.

The Championship Mode is also there and seems to function pretty much as it does in the final game. However, not all levels load and the game may crash.

The beta has a profile system, allowing you to save and load your game. Progress through the Championship Mode did not seem to save, though.

There is a Multiplayer Mode, although it is unknown if this works at all.

The Glimmering Sands level is one of the beta levels. In Practice Mode, you can go off the track and literally to the edge of the level. Some of the buildings are incomplete and you can ride right through others. There seems to be an unused area with pools of water and grass. Go off the edge and your character and vehicle fall into an endless void ... it's still sunny, though!

Another level that is quite extensive is the Indian Pines level. This has some tough terrain, plus a very sudden drop.

The central area is covered in water, unlike the final game, and you can drive into the murky depths if you so wish. Not all of the levels allow you to roam off the track, though.

The Pool game is fun. You ride around a pool table, knocking balls into pockets on your ATV. The game seems unfinished, though. Do you play against another player or the CPU?

The loading screen for the games gives you an idea of the controls, which are more basic than the released game.

In all, a nice find, along with a few new cheats for the final game.
